What is the Best Way to Handle My Billing?

Updated: Jul 19, 2019

In-house billing problems.

Big billing company problems.

How do I handle my billing?

There’s a problem with in-house billing. The problem with in-house billing is getting a competent biller in there and then keeping them. Staff turnover, people who aren’t trained properly, all these things make it very difficult to have a good in-house billing department.

Then there’s a problem with outsourcing to a billing company. The problem with outsourcing to a billing company is they don't give the same one-on-one attention as an in-house billing department. So you outsource to a big company and then they basically just submit the claims and whatever comes back is what comes back. They submit 100 claims on your behalf, 30 of them get paid and whatever that amount is, is all the value they bring to your office. They don’t find if cost effective to follow-up on the claims, probably because they’re also lacking in training. It’s just a problem with this industry.

So you wind up not being taken care of, your billing is not taken care of, and your claims are not followed-up on.

Recently I’ve been getting quite a bit of feedback that when doctors start asking questions and asking for certain things to get taken care of they’re just brushed off by the billing company.

So in-house billing has problems and big billing companies have problems. There are complications with both models in this industry. However the solution is really quite simple: you need the one-on-one attention of a billing specialist.

This is why I recommend outsourcing to a billing company that has billing specialists (a person that has become expert at their job and maintains a limited number of clients). It is extremely beneficial for the office because they get that one-on-one attention, they have someone very interested in getting those claims paid, but they also don’t have this problem of staff turnover or hiring people that don’t really know what they’re doing.

Specialists, like those at Exceptional Billing, go in as billers, as billing experts, who really know what to do and how to do it properly. Not just a paycheck-employee who is going to sort of half-heartedly just show up, clock in at 9am and clock out at 5pm.
